Events are stored in three log files: Application, Security, and System. These logs can be reviewed and archived.
For our purposes we want the System log. Click on "System" in the left-hand column for a list of events.
Look for a date and time when you weren't home and your computer should have been off.
double click on the eg: info n it will show u the detail.
You can also use this log to see how long someone was on the computer. Just look at the time the computer was turned on and off for that day.

Use system restore when you cannot boot your system

If your system has failed to the point where you cannot access the Windows GUI either through booting normally or through safe mode, you may still have the chance to use the System Restore feature if you have it enabled, by running it form the command prompt. To do this:

Restart your computer and press F8 after the POST screen to bring up the Windows XP boot menu. Choose 'boot in safe mode with command prompt.'

If your system gets to the command prompt successfully, type '%systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe' and then press enter. Follow the onscreen instructions to restore your computer to a previous saved point.

Renaming The Start Button

To rename the start button, you will need a hex editor.
My preference is UltraEdit

Copy the \windows\explore.exe file to a new name (e.g. explorer_1.exe)
With the hex editor, open that file and go to offset 412b6
You will see the word start with blanks between each letter
Edit it be any 5 characters or less
Save the file
Boot to DOS
Copy the existing c:\windows\explorer.exe to explorer.org
Copy explorer_1.exe to explorer.exe
You will also need to replace the explorer.exe in the c:\windows\system32\dllcache file as well with the new one.
Note: If the partition is NTFS and you can't access the files from DOS:

Start Regedit
Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows NT \ CurrentVersion \ Winlogon.
Change the value of Shell from Explorer.exe to explorer_1.exe

Removing the Recycle Bin from the Desktop

If you don't use the Recycle Bin to store deleted files , you can get rid of its desktop icon all together. Run Regedit and go to:



HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/explorer/Desktop/NameSpace

Increasing Band-Width By 20%

Microsoft reserves 20% of your available bandwidth for their own purposes like Windows Updates and interrogating your PC etc

To get it back:

Click Start then Run and type "gpedit.msc" without quotes.This opens the group policy editor. Then go to:
Local Computer Policy then Computer Configuration then Administrative Templates then Network then QOS Packet Scheduler and then to Limit Reservable Bandwidth. Double click on Limit Reservable bandwidth. It will say it is not configured, but the truth is under the 'Explain' tab i.e."By default, the Packet Scheduler limits the system to 20 percent of the bandwidth of a connection, but you can use this setting to override the default."
So the trick is to ENABLE reservable bandwidth, then set it to ZERO. This will allow the system to reserve nothing, rather than the default 20%.It works on Win 2000 as well.

Automatically close non-responsive programs

With a small registry tweak, Windows XP can be set to automatically close any program that 'stops responding' (crashes), eliminating the need for you to use the task manager to close down the offending software manually.

To do this:

Open REGEDIT and navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\ Desktop

Modify the REG_SZ entry AutoEndTasks with a value of 1

Pagefile.sys is a windows system file which acts as a virtual memory extension of a computer’s real memory RAM. By default, pagefile.sys is set to the same size as your actual physical memory size and might consume a huge disk space of your computer hard drive space. When physical RAM is fully used and there is need for more memory, information/data not currently being accessed can be ’swapped’ to that location and thus free physical RAM for immediate use. That same data can be transferred back if need be, into physical RAM at any time.

There are some easy ways to just turn off Paging file generation, but for systems lesser than 512MB RAM, it would mean disaster. hence I do not recommend turning off the Paging file generation. As mentioned before, assuming you have enough hard disk space to spare, you can convert that space to speed and improve the performance of your Windows XP/Vista. You must have guessed it by now. the trick is to increase the size of pagefile.sys, thereby giving your PC morevirtual memory to use

JUST FOLLOW THESE STEPS

1. Know the size of the RAM installed on your computer by right clicking on My Computer and choosing Properties.

2. Go to Control Panel and run System.

3. Click on Advanced tab and click the Settings button on Performance.

4. Click on Advanced tab again and click on the Change button

5. Select “Custom Size”. Give the Initial size and Maximum size as 1.5 times your RAM size.

6. Restart the computer for the changes to take effect.

Hide Files in USB Safely

We all loves portability and know USB drives have replaced the CD,DVD’s and other storage media’s. This huge increase in popularity of USB drives amde them to available in various colors, shapes and sizes at very low price. Now, many users prefer to carry all important documents, applications,etc., with their portable USB drive.They even serve as an external RAM and Hardisk.

However, if you use the USB drives frequently with your colleagues or friends then becomes difficult to keep private and important files with the same USB drive. One option is to be have devoted seperate USB drive to keep their private and important document and another option to hide all yourimportant documents, files and folders on the USB drive.

But here is new way on how to hide folders and files on USB or other portable media with a Freeware. That is WinMend. WinMend allows you to hide folders and files in harddrives and even also on a portable media like USB.

The files are hidden safely which is not visible when it is accessed on another operating system on the same computer or reinstalled on another computer. You can set a master password for WinMend and files and folders such that it can be unhidden only by entering that valid master password.

Restricting window features through registry editor

1. Click Start → Run and type regedit.

2. Scroll Down to following registry keys-

Change Start logo in Xp

I’ve read a number of articles on the internet about changing the text on the Start button in XP. On more than one occasion I’ve seen references to a five (5) letter limitation when the button is renamed. I always wondered if this was true or just an assumption someone made because the default ‘start’ just happened to fit the button size. So, I decided to run a test and see if there really was a five character limit.

First of all just u need to do is download Resource hacker.

Resource HackerTM is a freeware utility to view, modify, rename, add, delete and extract resources in 32bit Windows executables and resource files (*.res). It incorporates an internal resource script compiler and decompiler and works on Win95, Win98, WinME, WinNT, Win2000 and WinXP operating systems.

First Step

The first step is to make a backup copy of the file explorer.exe located at C:\Windows\explorer. Place it in a folder somewhere on your hard drive where it will be safe. Start Resource Hacker and open explorer.exe located at C:\Windows\explorer.exe
The category we are going to be using is String Table In Resource Hacker. Expand it by clicking the plus sign then navigate down to and expand string 37 followed by highlighting 1033. If you are using the Classic Layout rather than the XP Layout, use number 38. The right hand pane will display the stringtable as shown in Fig. 02. We’re going to modify item 578, currently showing the word “start” just as it displays on the current Start button.

There is no magic here. Just double click on the word “start” so that it’s highlighted, making sure the quotation marks are not part of the highlight. They need to remain in place, surrounding the new text that you’ll type. Go ahead and type your new entry

Second Step – Modify the Registry

Now that the modified explorer.exe has been created it’s necessary to modify the registry so the file will be recognized when the user logs on to the system. If you don’t know how to access the registry I’m not sure this article is for you, but just in case it’s a temporary memory lapse, go to Start (soon to be something else) Run and type regedit in the Open: field. Navigate to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ SOFTWARE\ Microsoft\ Windows NT\ CurrentVersion\ Winlogon

the right pane (Fig. 05), double click the Shell entry to open the Edit String dialog box as shown in Fig. 06. In Value data: line, enter the name that was used to save the modified explorer.exe file. Click OK.

Close Registry Editor and either log off the system and log back in, or reboot the entire system if that’s your preference. If all went as planned you should see your new Start button with the revised text.

I have seen many users discussing about this and today i just tried and it works well. We can add our self as friend and write a testimonial and rate our self Karma Rating. We can do many things which can be done to other friends. Below is the detailed procedure how it is being done.



1. Login to Orkut Your Profile.



2. At bottom of right side sidebar there is an option "invite friends" enter any random e-mail id which does not exist. Make sure to keep a note of it then click on. Once you do this a notification comes up saying "An invitation has been sent to so that something@gmail.com can join the Orkut community. something@gmail.com has also been added to your friends list."



3. Now Navigate to "Friends" option which is on top menu and near to Orkut logo



4. Now you will see the e-mail id which you added recently saying something@gmail.com "has not joined." in your all friends. Right side of it you will find two options Send New Invitation and Edit.



5. Click on Edit option and replace something@gmail.com with your own Orkut profile mail id and click on Update option



6. Now login to your Orkut Default mail account, you will receive e-mail from Orkut saying "Your Name" wants you to join orkut. Click on Join now! option.



7. It will redirect you to Orkut signup page. Click on "Sign up for orkut and connect to Your Name" now you will be redirected to Google Account page where it will ask you to fill your information. You don’t have to fill it. On top there is an option which says "Your Google Account gives you access to orkut and other Google services. If you already have a Google Account, you can sign in here." Click on sign in. Now sign in with your Orkut password


8. Now sign in with your Orkut password.

9. Now you will receive Friendship request from your self Don’t add it. (Don’t Do anything)



10. Now repeat same thing from 1 till 8 procedures with same mail id which you used before.



11. Once you have done from 1 to 8 procedures, now it will automatically add yourself as your friend.

Create a trail image

1. Open Paint, then open an image.
2. Right-click on the image and select "Select All"
3. Now hold the "Shift" key and move the image around. The image will be drawn with trail.

1. Open Paint, then open a small image.
2. Select the zoom "Magnifier" tool.
3. Windows Paint lists out the zoom options from 1x to 8x, but there is a 10x...
4. After selecting the Magnifier tool, point the mouse right at the border line right under "8x" and left-click. There you go.. the hidden 10x.

Ban Shutdowns : A trick to Play on Lamers

This is a neat trick you can play on that lamer that has a huge ego, in this section I teach you, how to disable the Shut Down option in the Shut Down Dialog Box. This trick involves editing the registry, so please make backups. Launch regedit.exe and go to :

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

In the right pane look for the NoClose Key. If it is not already there then create it by right clicking in the right pane and selecting New > String Value.(Name it NoCloseKey ) Now once you see the NoCloseKey in the right pane, right click on it and select Modify. Then Type 1 in the Value Data Box.

Doing the above on a Win98 system disables the Shut Down option in the Shut Down Dialog Box. But on a Win95 machine if the value of NoCloseKey is set to 1 then click on the Start > Shut Down button displays the following error message:

This operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your system administrator.

You can enable the shut down option by changing the value of NoCloseKey to 0 or simply deleting the particular entry i.e. deleting NoCloseKey.

Instead of performing the above difficult to remember process, simply save the following with an extension of .reg and add it's contents to the registry by double clicking on it.
